How to beat the Zeppelin in Balloon Tower Defense

A Zeppelin arrives on wave 10 and two more on wave 20. It has 250 health, it resists most of what you have been building, and if it reaches the end it takes 20 of your 40 lives — half your run, from one balloon. The instinct is to answer it with more damage. That instinct is wrong, and the tower that actually beats it is the one almost nobody builds.

The Zeppelin is an exposure check, not a damage check

Here is the number that reframes the whole fight. Take a fully upgraded Pin Cannon — the heaviest single-target tower in the game — and park it on a long straight. Over one Zeppelin's entire trip through its range, it lands 160 damage. The Zeppelin has 250 health. Your best damage tower, played perfectly, does 64% of the job.

That is not because your tower is weak. It is because a tower only deals damage while the target is inside its circle, and the Zeppelin crosses a 185-pixel radius in about fourteen seconds. Damage per second is only half the equation. Seconds in range is the other half, and it is the half you can move the most.

What one tower actually contributes

Every figure below is one tower, level 3 unless stated, against the wave-10 Zeppelin, counting the full time it spends in that tower's range on a long straight — and after the Zeppelin's resistances are applied.

Tower Damage type Time in range Share of one Zeppelin
Sun Lens Burn ×1 23 s 102%
Pin Cannon Pierce ×1 14 s 64%
Dart Post Blunt ×0.6 11 s 37%
Static Coil Shock ×0.75 12 s 25%
Tack Ring Blunt ×0.6 8 s 6%

Two things jump out. Tack Ring is worthless here — its radial burst is built for crowds, and against one big target almost every tack misses. Static Coil is nearly as bad, for the same reason plus a shock resistance: its chain has nothing to chain to. And the Sun Lens beats the Pin Cannon despite similar damage per second, purely because its range is far larger and the Zeppelin sits in it for nine seconds longer.

The Frost Fan is the Zeppelin's hardest counter

This is the part that looks wrong on paper. The Zeppelin resists 50% of any slow effect, so the slowing tower should be the one tower it shrugs off. In practice the Frost Fan is the single biggest damage multiplier you can put on the board against it, and the reason is that the Frost Fan does two separate things and the Zeppelin only resists one of them.

And the headwind is scaled by how much wind a balloon catches. The Zeppelin has the highest wind sensitivity of any balloon in the game — a huge surface, 1.4× where a rubber balloon is 1.0×. The thing that makes it hard to slow is exactly the thing that makes it easiest to push back against.

A level-3 Frost Fan near your kill zone on wave 10 takes the Zeppelin from 25.9 pixels per second down to 12.7 — it spends twice as long in range of everything you own — and its chilled debuff adds 15% damage on top. Combined, that is roughly 2.3× more damage from every other tower on the board, for one 300-coin building. No upgrade anywhere else comes close.

Put concretely, on wave 10: a Pin Cannon that was doing 64% of a Zeppelin does 150% of it with a Frost Fan beside it. It stops being a boss and starts being a slow balloon.

Wave 10: the rubber flood and the Zeppelin never actually meet

Wave 10 is one Zeppelin at the start, then twenty Rubber Balloons five seconds later. Every player assumes they have to fight both at once. They do not, and knowing this changes how you play it.

Wave 10 runs under a tailwind, which pushes the rubber up to about 62 pixels per second while the Zeppelin manages 26. The rubber overtakes it early, and the last rubber balloon reaches the exit at around 37 seconds while the Zeppelin does not arrive until 60. You fight the flood first, and then you get roughly twenty seconds of undisturbed shooting at a single slow target.

What that means in practice: do not panic-build during the rubber phase, and do not judge your board by how the first twenty seconds look. Keep your dart line for the rubber, and let the Pin Cannon, Sun Lens and Frost Fan do their work on the Zeppelin afterwards. Popping it pays 150 coins — the biggest single payout in the game, and the budget for your wave 11 rebuild.

Wave 20: two Zeppelins, a Gale, and everything else

The finale is a different problem. Two Zeppelins with 450 health each, eight Weather Balloons, sixteen Mylar Balloons — and the wind is a Gale, the strongest phase in the game. If both Zeppelins leak, that is 40 lives, which is your entire run.

The Gale is the good news, though, because of one interaction: the Sun Lens gains range with wind strength in either direction. At level 3 under a Gale its radius grows from 245 to 355 pixels — the largest circle any tower reaches at any point in the game, covering the Zeppelin for nearly 24 seconds. It is the only tower that gets stronger because wave 20 is windy.

The order also helps. The sixteen Mylar are fast and arrive first, from about 29 seconds; the Weather Balloons land from 41; the Zeppelins are last, at 52 and 60 seconds. The wave sorts itself into three phases, and your Pin Cannon covers the first two anyway — Mylar and Weather both take full pierce damage.

With a level-3 Frost Fan running, a level-3 Sun Lens alone does 130% of a wave-20 Zeppelin, and a level-3 Pin Cannon does 69%. Together with a dart line for the trash, that clears it.

The board that beats it

  1. One Frost Fan, upgraded, next to your kill zone. Not out on its own — its aura is what makes everything else work, so it needs to overlap the towers that do damage. This is the highest-value 300 coins on the board.
  2. A Sun Lens on the longest sightline you have. Range is doing the heavy lifting, and burn is unresisted. On Meadow Run that means the long middle section or the final straight.
  3. A Pin Cannon, level 2 or 3. Pierce is the other unresisted type, and it targets the highest-health balloon in range — which is always the Zeppelin.
  4. Keep your dart line. Blunt is resisted but Dart Post level 3 still throws three darts at 2.4 shots a second, which is a real 37% of a wave-10 Zeppelin, and it is what clears the rubber and foil around it.
  5. Do not build Tack Rings or Static Coils for this. They are crowd tools. Keep the ones you have for the trash waves; do not buy more expecting them to help here.
